Red 40
Color for the buyer, none for the dog
Red 40 is a synthetic dye that gives dog food a red shade. It adds no nutrition or flavor. A small, older dog study found no lasting harm at the doses tested, but it cannot settle every question about lifetime use.
Role in the food Does a job- What it is
- A certified synthetic red dye added to dog food for appearance, with no nutritional purpose.
- Made from
- Synthetic chemical compounds, not food materials
- Main job
- Colors the food red
- Typical amount
- Not published; visible coloring tested at 50 mg/kg feed
- Watch for
- Color says nothing about meat content
- Not the same as
- Red 3
Straight answer
Is Red 40 safe for dogs?
Read the food ingredients, then decide on dye
Red 40 near the end of a list means the maker added color, not nutrition. Check the protein sources, fat source, and nutritional adequacy statement first. If two foods otherwise suit your dog, choose the one without dye. The red shade gives your dog no nutritional benefit.

What it is
How it is made
Chemical manufacturers make Red 40 to supply a consistent food color. They react prepared compounds, purify the resulting dye, and send batches for FDA certification before use in U.S. food.4,5,6
- 01 // Source Synthetic compounds Manufacturers start from synthetic chemical compounds, not from any plant, animal or food material.
- 02 // Process First compound prepared One aromatic compound is treated so it can join with a second compound.
- 03 // Process Red dye formed The prepared compound reacts with a naphthalene compound, forming the red dye molecule.
- 04 // Output Certified red powder The purified dye is isolated as a sodium salt, then its batches must pass FDA certification.

Why it is in the bag
Colors the kibble for you, feeds your dog nothing
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add Red 40 so the food looks red to the buyer. FDA says certified synthetic colors give an intense, uniform shade, cost less, and blend easily into many hues. The dye supplies no protein, fat or calories. Labels list ingredients by weight, and Red 40 sits low on the lists it appears in, so the amount is likely tiny. It colors the food and does nothing else for the dog.6,11

01
Makes food look red
Red 40 changes the appearance of the food. EFSA observed visible coloring in a dog food test; that result says nothing about flavor or nutrition.2
-
02
Keeps color consistent
FDA says certified synthetic colors give manufacturers an intense, uniform shade that blends easily. The dye serves the look of the recipe for the buyer.6
-
03
Costs less to color
FDA says certified synthetic colors generally cost less than colors from natural sources. Their strength also lets manufacturers use a small amount.2,6
How much EFSA found visible coloring at 50 mg/kg of dog feed; a typical amount across commercial recipes was not published.2
Our read // The claims
What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.
-
Brands say
Red 40 visibly colors dog food
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
EFSA found visible coloring at 50 mg/kg in a complementary dog food. That directly supports the appearance claim. It does not show improved flavor, nutrition, or a dog's preference for the food.2
-
Brands say
Red 40 is harmless in dog food
Outruns the evidence
Evidence

- None
An older beagle study fed 8 dogs per dose for 104 weeks without lasting clinical or tissue changes. EFSA later calculated a 370 mg/kg feed safety level from rat data because suitable dog safety data were not supplied. Harmless is too absolute.1,3
-
Owners say
Red 40 makes dogs hyperactive
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong

- Thin
- None
A California review assessed behavioral effects of synthetic dyes in children, often tested as mixtures. It did not test dogs. The older beagle feeding study recorded normal behavior, but it was not a behavioral challenge at a pet food coloring dose.1,8
-
Critics say
Red 40 causes cancer in dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
The 104-week beagle study reported no lasting tissue changes, although it was too small to rule out rare outcomes. EFSA's later mouse DNA damage test was negative. These findings do not show cancer caused by Red 40 in dog food.1,3
-
Owners say
Red 40 means the food contains red meat
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
Red 40 is a color additive, not a meat ingredient. EFSA observed a red shade after adding it to dog food at 50 mg/kg. The color cannot tell you which protein ingredients went into the recipe.2
Straight answers
What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt adds no nutrition, but it has a specific job: coloring the food. It is used in a small amount, not to supply bulk, calories, or protein. Judge those parts of the recipe by its food ingredients.2
-
Q02
Does red mean meat?
NoA dye can make food look red regardless of its protein source. Read the named meat and plant ingredients for that information. Red 40 tells you about appearance, not what supplies the protein.2
-
Q03
Is Red 40 banned?
NoThe current U.S. rule still lists Red 40 for food coloring and requires certified batches. FDA is encouraging a voluntary move away from petroleum-based colors, but that has not removed Red 40 from the regulation. Red 3 is a different dye.5,9
