Alfalfa

A forage fiber with modest value in kibble

Alfalfa is a forage crop whose leaves and stems are dried and ground for feed. In dog food it contributes fiber and some minerals. Claims that it improves digestion or protects a dog's health outrun the evidence.

Straight answer

Is Alfalfa safe for dogs?

Read it as fiber, then judge the food

When alfalfa sits below the main protein, starch and fat, treat it as a modest fiber addition. If it appears near the top, ask the maker how much the food contains and for finished food digestibility data. Check the nutritional adequacy statement before relying on the food as a complete diet.

What it is

How it is made

Farmers grow alfalfa as livestock forage. It is a crop, rather than a processing leftover. Some of the cut leaves and stems are dried and ground into meal that feed makers can weigh into recipes.4

  1. 01 // Source Leafy forage Farmers cut the leaves and stems above the ground, leaving the plant to regrow.
  2. 02 // Process Wilt and chop Cut alfalfa loses moisture in the field and is chopped before it reaches a dehydration plant.
  3. 03 // Process Dry and grind The plant dries the chopped forage, then grinds it into meal instead of leaving long stems.
  4. 04 // Output Alfalfa meal The dried leaf and stem mixture arrives at the food plant as a ground feed ingredient.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

29

% crude fiber

About 29% of dehydrated alfalfa is crude fiber. Its clearest contribution to a dog food is plant bulk.

Crude fiber 15.7-38.5%3
Neutral detergent fiber 32.3-54.7%3
Crude protein 13.1-27.9%3
Calcium 11.5-33.6 g/kg3
Ash 8.1-16.8%3

As the plant matures, stems take a larger share, so fiber rises and protein falls. Lost leaves during drying shift the mix too. Earlier cutting across successive harvests can instead raise protein.4

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds forage fiber

Ground leaves and stems add plant cell walls to the recipe. A controlled dog trial included alfalfa in a fiber blend, but could not isolate its effect on stool or digestion.1,3

  2. 02

    Contributes some calcium

Dehydrated alfalfa contains calcium, though an ingredient list gives no amount for the finished food. The recipe's full mineral balance matters more than this ingredient alone.3,6

  3. 03

    Draws on forage supply

Alfalfa is already grown, dried and ground for livestock feed. Pet food makers can obtain meal through that existing supply without creating a separate crop.4

How much A controlled dog diet contained 1.5% dehydrated alfalfa meal alongside other fibers and a probiotic; it did not test alfalfa alone.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

Alfalfa adds fiber to dog food

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Dehydrated alfalfa averages 28.6% crude fiber on a dry basis. One controlled dog diet included 1.5% alfalfa among other fibers. The fiber contribution is real; that arithmetic does not show a special gut benefit.1,3

  2. Brands say

    Alfalfa gives dogs antioxidant protection

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 60-animal raccoon dog trial found changes in blood antioxidant markers after alfalfa feeding. It measured no health benefit. Raccoon dogs are a different species, and the result does not show protection in pet dogs.2

  3. Brands say

    Alfalfa improves a dog's digestion

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

At 5%, alfalfa did not improve nutrient digestibility in raccoon dogs. A 12-dog trial used it within a fiber and probiotic blend and found lower dry matter digestibility. Neither trial supports better digestion from alfalfa.1,2

  4. Critics say

    Alfalfa is just filler

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Dehydrated alfalfa averages 28.6% crude fiber and contains calcium, so it contributes something measurable. Its amount in a particular food is undisclosed; the ingredient name alone cannot show how much it contributes.3,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It supplies fiber and some calcium, which are real contributions. Its value is modest when used in a small amount. Judge the finished food's nutritional adequacy instead of treating one leafy ingredient as proof of quality.3,6

  2. Q02

Is it the same as sprouts?

    No

The feed ingredient is dried, ground leaves and stems from a grown forage crop. Sprouts are young plants grown from germinated seeds. Research on sprouts should not be applied to alfalfa meal in kibble.4

  3. Q03

How much alfalfa is in this food?

    Usually undisclosed

Ingredients are listed by weight, but the list gives no percentage. One controlled dog diet used 1.5% alfalfa meal. That trial amount does not tell you how much is in the bag you hold.1,6
