Chamomile

A fragrant herb with unproved calming power

Chamomile is dried flower material added for its herbal aroma and familiar calming reputation. A dog study found more rest after feeding a blend that contained chamomile, but it cannot tell us whether chamomile itself calms a dog.

Made from
Harvested chamomile flower heads
Main job
Herbal aroma and appeal

One dry food declares 0.05%; typical amount unknown

Straight answer

Is Chamomile safe for dogs?

Read it as a minor herb

Look at where chamomile sits beside the main protein, starch and fat ingredients. Near the end, it is a small aromatic addition, not evidence that the food treats anxiety or stomach trouble. If the package promises calming, look for a controlled dog trial of that finished product. Ask which species a concentrated supplement contains.

What it is

How it is made

Chamomile is grown for its flowers, rather than recovered from another food process. Growers pick the flower heads, dry them for storage and supply them whole or ground for foods and supplements.3,4,7

  1. 01 // Source Chamomile plants German chamomile is grown as an herb whose fragrant flower heads are the harvested part.
  2. 02 // Process Flowers picked Growers harvest heads near full bloom, separating them from the stems.
  3. 03 // Process Flowers dried The harvested heads are dried so they stay stable for storage before use as an herb ingredient.
  4. 04 // Output Dried flowers Whole dried heads or ground flower powder are ready to be mixed into a recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

23

% crude fiber

Crude fiber in one tested German chamomile flower sample. The herb contributes little fiber to a food when added at the low level disclosed in one dry recipe.

Crude fiber 23.1%2
Crude protein 14.2%2
Ash 8.8%2
Crude fat 3.4%2

These figures describe one German chamomile flower sample, not every supplier's powder. German and Roman chamomile are different plants, and German chamomile's aromatic compounds also vary by cultivar and origin.2,3,6

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds an herbal aroma

German chamomile flowers have an applelike scent. The flowers add an aromatic note, although the finished food's smell also reflects its other ingredients.4

  2. 02

    Carries a calming pitch

A dry food brand presents chamomile as a traditionally soothing herb. Its inclusion gives that claim a recognizable ingredient name, but the brand's label does not demonstrate an effect.7

  3. 03

    Takes little formula space

One complete dry food declares 0.05% dried chamomile. At that disclosed level, the herb contributes little bulk protein or starch while remaining visible on the ingredient list.7

  4. 04

    Ships as a dried herb

Dried flower heads and powder give manufacturers an ingredient they can store and measure into a recipe without handling fresh flowers.3,4

How much One complete dry dog food declares 0.05% dried chamomile; the sources reviewed do not show a typical kibble inclusion.7

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    4. None

A study observed more nighttime rest in 30 foxhounds after 28 days on a four-herb blend. It compared behavior before and after feeding, without a separate placebo group or a chamomile-only arm. The result cannot credit chamomile.1

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

An NIH review describes studies of mixed-herb products for childhood diarrhea and says chamomile alone has not shown that benefit. Those studies did not test dogs or a chamomile-containing dog food.6

  3. Brands say

    Chamomile provides antioxidant protection

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Researchers measured antioxidant activity in chamomile flower extracts using laboratory assays. Those assays did not feed dogs or measure health outcomes, so they cannot show protection from the 0.05% declared in one dry food.2,7

  4. Owners say

Any chamomile in dog food poisons dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

ASPCA identifies Roman chamomile as toxic to dogs and lists digestive and skin reactions. German chamomile is a different species. The ASPCA entry gives no dose showing that a small inclusion in finished food is poisonous.5,6

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It has a purpose as an aromatic herb and a recognizable part of a calming recipe. At the 0.05% declared in one dry food, its own fiber and protein make no meaningful contribution to the food's bulk nutrition.2,4,7

  2. Q02

Will it help my anxious dog?

    Unproven

The dog study tested chamomile together with three other herbs and compared behavior before and after feeding. It did not isolate chamomile or test ordinary kibble. A calming promise needs evidence for the finished product.1

  3. Q03

    Is chamomile poisonous to dogs?

    Species matters

ASPCA flags Roman chamomile and lists vomiting, diarrhea and allergic reactions. German chamomile is a separate plant. A label that says only chamomile leaves the species unclear; ask the maker before giving a concentrated supplement.5,6
