Chicken Gizzard

A real chicken protein with modest claims

Chicken gizzard is the cleaned muscle from a chicken's stomach. It adds protein to food and treats, but the name alone cannot tell you how much protein ends up in the finished recipe or whether that recipe is complete.

Role in the food Main nutrition
Chicken Gizzard
What it is
The cleaned muscular stomach of a chicken, used as a named animal protein ingredient.
Made from
Chicken gizzards after cleaning
Main job
Animal protein
Typical amount
Not published for complete dog food
Watch for
Chicken allergy and raw food handling
Not the same as
Chicken liver

Straight answer

Is Chicken Gizzard safe for dogs?

Count it as chicken, then check the food

Chicken gizzard on a bag means a named chicken protein, not a verdict on the recipe. Read what sits around it and check the guaranteed analysis and nutritional adequacy statement. If the product is a topper or treat, feed it as an extra. Skip it for a dog avoiding chicken.

What it is

How it is made

Poultry processors remove the gizzard while dressing chickens for meat, then cut it open to clear out its contents and tough lining. Pet food and treat makers use that stream as a named chicken ingredient.1,8

  1. 01 // Source Chicken gizzards The muscular stomach is removed from the bird during poultry processing.
  2. 02 // Process Cut and emptied The gizzard is cut open, and its contents and tough inner lining are removed.
  3. 03 // Output Cleaned gizzard The edible muscle goes to food production; researchers have also dried and ground it for dog biscuits.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

85

% protein

Approximate protein in the USDA raw gizzard entry after excluding water. Fresh gizzard still brings substantial water into a recipe.

Crude protein 85.4%4
Crude fat 10%4
Ash 4.6%4
Zinc 131.6 mg/kg4
Iron 120.5 mg/kg4
Calcium 532 mg/kg4

These rows are calculated from one USDA raw gizzard entry, not a range of batches. A separate analysis found similar protein but less fat, so trimming and the sampled birds matter.3,4

Why it is in the bag

Real chicken protein, a major share near the top

  1. Main nutrition
  2. Supporting nutrient
  3. Does a job
  4. Mostly filler

Gizzard is chicken muscle, and once its water is excluded it is mostly protein, so it adds real meat protein to the recipe. Labels list ingredients by weight, and fresh gizzard carries a lot of water. Near the top of the list it is likely one of the food's main protein sources. Listed past tenth, it is likely a smaller share beside chicken, chicken meal or liver, and a use for a cut every bird already supplies.4,7,8

  1. 01

    Adds chicken protein

Cleaned gizzard is mostly protein after its water is excluded. Its contribution to a finished food depends on the amount used and the rest of the recipe.3,4,6

  2. 02

    Uses more of the bird

Gizzards are recovered as a separate edible cut during poultry processing. Selling them for pet food uses that existing supply, although the label reveals no price or cost saving.1,8

  3. 03

    Works in dried treats

Researchers dried and ground gizzards for dog biscuits. That demonstrates a practical treat use, but it does not show how gizzard performs in complete dog food.1

How much A dog biscuit study tested 10 to 30% dried gizzard powder; no opened source gives a usual amount in complete food.1

Our read // The claims

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

  1. Brands say

    Gizzards add substantial chicken protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

USDA lists 17.66 g protein per 100 g raw gizzard, about 85% of its dry matter. It is a protein ingredient. Its name on a label cannot reveal its share of the finished food's protein.4,7

  2. Brands say

Gizzards are a lean chicken protein

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

USDA reports 2.06 g fat per 100 g raw gizzard; a separately trimmed sample had 0.81 g. Both are lean as sold, but the finished food's fat level depends on the full recipe.3,4

  3. Brands say

Gizzards make dogs love their food

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In a 12-dog biscuit test, average intake fell as gizzard powder rose from 10 to 30% of the recipe. Biscuits are not complete food, but this test does not support a special taste claim.1

  4. Owners say

Gizzards deliver nutrients like chicken liver

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

One chicken tissue analysis measured about 13 micrograms of vitamin A per 100 g raw gizzard versus 21,676 in liver. Gizzard contributes nutrients, but it does not share liver's vitamin A profile.3

  5. Owners say

Gizzard is safe for chicken allergic dogs

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

Gizzard is chicken tissue. A review identified chicken as an offending food in 45 of 297 dogs with food reactions. It did not test gizzard separately, so it gives no basis for exempting gizzard from chicken avoidance.2,8

Straight answers

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

It is chicken tissue that supplies protein. Whether it contributes much to a particular food depends on how much the maker uses; the ingredient name alone cannot tell you the finished food's protein quality.4,7

  2. Q02

Is gizzard the same as liver?

    No

The gizzard is a muscular stomach; liver is a different organ. Their nutrient profiles differ sharply, especially for vitamin A, so one ingredient name should not stand in for the other.3,8

  3. Q03

Can gizzard make a complete meal?

    Not alone

Protein from gizzard does not supply every nutrient a dog needs. For a sole diet, check the nutritional adequacy statement for a complete and balanced food suited to your dog's life stage.4,6
