Goji Berry

A small fruit addition with unproved health perks

Goji berry is the fruit also called wolfberry, often dried before it enters food manufacturing. It adds fruit solids and a recognizable name to dog food. A small dog trial tested purified goji compounds in capsules, not whole berries in food.

Straight answer

Is Goji Berry safe for dogs?

Read the main ingredients before the berry

If goji berry sits near the end of the list, treat it as a small fruit addition. Check the meat, other major ingredients and nutritional analysis first. The fruit contains pigments and sugars, but memory, eye and immunity benefits have not been shown at the amounts used in dog food.

What it is

How it is made

Growers sell ripe goji fruit into a food processing trade. Drying makes the fruit easier to store and ship; processors also turn fresh berries into pulp. A dog food label rarely identifies which form the maker used.2,3,4

  1. 01 // Source Ripe goji fruit Growers harvest the berries for drying or processing into other fruit products.
  2. 02 // Process Preserved Most commercial fruit is dried; another route beats and pasteurizes fresh berries into pulp.
  3. 03 // Process Sized for mixing Dried berries are sometimes ground into powder, while pulp is homogenized before packaging.
  4. 04 // Output Goji berry material Dried fruit, powder or pulp reaches the food maker for addition to a recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

87

% carbohydrate

Total carbohydrate in one dried fruit sample, calculated by difference. It includes fiber, so it does not mean the fruit is mostly sugar.

Total carbohydrate 87%2
Soluble sugars 27.9%2
Protein 5.3%2
Fat 4.1%2
Ash 3.2%2

These figures describe one dried fruit sample from one laboratory, not every supplier's berries. Another study reports its dried fruit measurements as fed, not dry matter, so those figures cannot be mixed into this panel.2,3

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds fruit solids

Goji contributes carbohydrate, sugars and other fruit components. At the amounts declared in published dog food formulas, it is too small an addition to supply much of the food's energy or protein.2,6,7

  2. 02

    Supports a label story

A maker can name the fruit and connect it to antioxidant claims. Using a fraction of a percent keeps it a minor recipe input; that economic reading is an inference from the published formulas.6,7,8

  3. 03

    Adds fruit pigment

Goji carries carotenoid pigments. They enter the recipe with the berry, but the cited studies did not test whether these small additions change the finished food's appearance or benefit the dog.3,6,7

How much One published formula lists a minimum of 0.075% goji berry, another lists 0.14%; the dog trial tested purified compounds in capsules rather than whole fruit.1,6,7

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A 42-day trial gave purified goji compounds or placebo in capsules to kenneled poodles, with 5 dogs per group. The treated groups improved on a memory task, but the trial did not test whole berries in food.1

  2. Brands say

Goji berries protect a dog's eyesight

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

A randomized study gave people with early eye disease 25 g of berries daily for 90 days and measured eye pigment. It measured a human eye outcome, not a canine one, and dog food formulas add only a fraction of a percent of goji berry.5,6,7,8

  3. Brands say

Goji antioxidants protect dogs from disease

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

In the 42-day poodle trial, purified goji compounds changed blood antioxidant markers. Researchers did not test disease prevention or whole berries in food. A marker change does not show that the berry protects dogs from illness.1,8

  4. Brands say

Goji berries boost a dog's immunity

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong
    2. Some
    3. Thin
    4. None

The 42-day poodle trial found changes in immune signaling markers after purified compounds were given in capsules. It did not measure infections or immune health, and it cannot show a benefit from whole berry in food.1,8

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    Mostly garnish

It is a real fruit with carbohydrate and other components. At the amounts declared in published formulas, its practical role is a small addition and a recognizable name, not substantial nourishment.2,6,7

  2. Q02

Will it help my dog's eyes?

    No proof

The cited eye trial studied people who ate 25 g of berries daily, not dogs, and published dog food formulas declare far smaller amounts of goji berry.5,6,7

  3. Q03

    What if it appears last?

    Expect little

Pet food ingredients are listed from most to least by weight. Goji near the end is a minor addition. Judge the food by its main ingredients and nutritional analysis.9

An ingredient on its own tells you very little. What matters is how much of it there is and where it sits in the list. That is why we weigh the top five rather than reacting to any single name further down. Back to the wiki
