Goose

Real poultry protein, with no allergy guarantee

Goose is fresh poultry flesh and skin used for protein and flavor in dog food. Its fat content depends on the cut and trimming. A goose label alone does not make a mixed recipe suitable for a dog with chicken allergy.

Straight answer

Is Goose safe for dogs?

Read the whole recipe around the goose

Goose near the top means fresh poultry was weighed into the recipe before cooking. Read the animal and plant proteins that follow it, then check the finished food's fat. If you need an allergy trial, the word goose does not prove that chicken is absent or that the food will suit your dog.

What it is

How it is made

Goose comes from poultry processors that dress birds and separate cuts for sale. Pet food makers use the raw poultry, which is chilled or frozen for transport rather than rendered into a dry meal.5,6,7

  1. 01 // Source Farmed geese Birds raised for meat enter a poultry processing plant.
  2. 02 // Process Dressed Processors slaughter, scald and pluck the birds, then prepare the carcasses for cutting.
  3. 03 // Process Cut and chilled Carcasses are separated into usable parts, and the raw poultry is kept cold or frozen.
  4. 04 // Output Fresh goose Flesh and skin, sometimes with attached bone, arrive as a raw ingredient for the dog food recipe.

What is in it

Composition, dry matter

74-92

% protein

The protein range across excised breast and leg muscle in a goose feeding study. It does not describe every mix of goose parts used in food.

Crude protein 74.3-92.3%3
Crude fat 8.7-18.2%3
Ash 0.7-2.1%3

These figures come from small samples of breast and leg muscle; the study does not state whether skin was left on. Breast and leg values differed, and whole cuts with skin or attached bone used in pet food will differ further.3,5,6

Why it is in the bag

What the manufacturer gets

  1. 01

    Adds animal protein

Goose muscle supplies protein. The amount reaching a dog depends on which parts enter the recipe and how much goose remains after cooking removes water.3,5

  2. 02

    Offers another poultry

Brands sell goose to owners seeking an alternative protein. For an allergy trial, its usefulness depends on the dog's food history and every other protein in the recipe.8,10,11

  3. 03

    Changes the flavor

USDA says all goose meat is dark meat with a stronger flavor than chicken breast meat.6

  4. 04

    Serves a smaller supply

Goose is a minor species in US poultry, where chicken, turkey and eggs make up most production and goose consumption trails even duck. One small plant profiled by USDA schedules separate days for duck and goose runs because the birds differ in size from chickens.7,12

How much Two published dry formulas list 8% and 30% fresh goose; those examples do not define a typical amount.10,11

What the evidence supports

Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

    Goose provides high quality protein

    3. Thin
    4. None

A goose feeding study measured crude protein in muscle, 74.26 to 92.33% dry matter across breast and leg. It recorded protein content, not amino acid profile or digestibility, so it says nothing about protein quality in dogs or any species.3

Goose is safe for chicken allergic dogs

Merck advises picking proteins from a dog's own food history and warns of possible cross-reactivity between related species. A label survey found undeclared animal species in 23 of 40 tested products. Neither source shows that goose itself is safe for a chicken-allergic dog.1,2,8,10

  3. Owners say

Goose is always a fatty meat

    Outruns the evidence

    Evidence

    1. Strong

    3. Thin
    4. None

Muscle samples excised from goose breast and leg in a feeding study ranged from 8.68 to 18.19% fat on a dry matter basis, and the study does not say whether skin was included. USDA notes a fat layer sits beneath goose skin, so whole cuts with skin typically run fattier than trimmed muscle alone.3,6

  4. Brands say

Goose is especially easy to digest

    4. None

A maker calls its 30% fresh goose recipe easily digestible but provides no dog digestibility comparison. The cited goose muscle study measured composition in geese, not digestion or symptoms in dogs eating finished food.3,10

What owners ask

  1. Q01

    Is it just filler?

    No

Goose supplies animal protein and some fat. The useful question is how much of the finished food's protein comes from goose, especially when concentrated plant proteins follow fresh goose on the ingredient list.3,5,10

  2. Q02

Does goose first mean mostly goose?

    No

Ingredients are listed by weight when added, so fresh goose brings water into that ranking. One food lists 30% fresh goose yet reports that only 21.4% of its total protein comes from animal sources.5,10

  3. Q03

Will goose work for chicken allergy?

    No guarantee

Check every animal ingredient, including meals and flavors. A protein is novel only if your dog has not eaten it, and related proteins might cross-react. A diagnostic elimination diet needs a controlled trial followed by a challenge.1,8,10
