Feed additive makers combine iron from a soluble salt with amino acids to make a mineral concentrate. A kibble plant adds the concentrate through a premix so a small iron addition spreads through the batch.1,5,10

    Iron is part of hemoglobin, and AAFCO sets an adult maintenance minimum of 40 mg/kg dry matter. This complex supplies iron. A 22-dog trial found adequate blood measures with dietary iron alone, so supplementation depends on the whole recipe.3,6,8
