Papaya

Papaya growers sell fruit for fresh eating and processing. Processors can turn the flesh into puree or dried pulp. Juice extraction leaves a separate peel-and-seed residue called pomace. A dog-food label does not disclose which fruit form was used.^2,3,4,7,8

1. 01 // Source Papaya fruit Ripe fruit supplies the flesh used in puree and dried fruit products.
2. 02 // Process Remove skin and seeds Puree processors separate skin and seeds from the flesh because they can affect flavor.
3. 03 // Process Prepare the pulp Puree is frozen or acidified with citric acid because papaya has a high pH; drying pulp is another tested route.
4. 04 // Output Prepared papaya Fruit flesh or processed pulp is ready for formulation, although the ingredient name does not disclose its form.

1. 01

   Adds fruit flavor

Ripe papaya contributes a mild fruit taste and orange color. The label does not reveal whether the recipe contains enough for a dog to notice.^3,7,8

2. 02

   Adds some fiber

Papaya fruit contains crude fiber. Its effect on stool depends on how much fruit is used, and the ingredient list gives no amount.^2,8

3. 03

   Mostly water when fresh

Fresh papaya averages about 8% dry matter as fed, so most of its listed weight is water that leaves during cooking. Dried pulp carries more fruit solids per pound.^2,4

How much A typical inclusion rate is not published; the controlled dog trial tested extracted papain, not papaya fruit.¹

Papain in papaya improves protein digestion

   Evidence

   1. Strong
   2. Some
   3. Thin
   4. None

An 18-dog trial added extracted papain before extrusion and found no improvement in nutrient digestibility. Commercial papain comes from unripe fruit latex, which declines as fruit ripens. That trial does not prove a benefit from ripe papaya.^1,5

   Papaya fiber keeps dogs regular

Feedipedia's fiber figure comes from 2 fruit samples, not a stool outcome. The controlled dog trial tested extracted papain, not fruit fiber. PetMD instead warns papaya can cause loose stools, the opposite of keeping a dog regular.^1,2,9

Papaya antioxidants protect a dog's health

   2. Some
   3. Thin
   4. None

A laboratory comparison measured antioxidants in freeze-dried and spray-dried papaya pulp, not health outcomes in dogs. Dogs make their own vitamin C. Fruit compounds alone do not demonstrate protection at pet-food amounts.^4,6

   Papaya is just useless filler

   Outruns the evidence

   4. None

Feedipedia's 2 fruit samples contained fiber, and ripe papaya contributes flavor and color. Its contribution could be small in a particular recipe, but the label does not disclose enough to call every use useless.^2,7,8

Papaya contains enough papain to aid digestion

Papain is extracted from the latex of unripe fruit, and latex production falls during ripening. The papaya name on a bag gives no enzyme activity, while the 18-dog enzyme trial found no digestibility gain.^1,5
