Sodium Propionate
A mold inhibitor, not dog nutrition
Sodium propionate is a manufactured salt added to inhibit mold. Studies found less mold in treated feed ingredients and laboratory biscuits, but did not test finished kibble. For your dog, it serves no meaningful nutritional purpose.
Role in the food Does a job- What it is
- A manufactured salt of propionic acid used to slow mold growth in food and feed.
- Made from
- Propionic acid and sodium hydroxide
- Main job
- Inhibit mold growth
- Typical amount
- Not found in sources reviewed
- Watch for
- Dogs on sodium restricted diets
- Not the same as
- Propionic acid
Straight answer
Is Sodium Propionate safe for dogs?
Read it as a preservative, then move on
Sodium propionate on a bag tells you the maker added a mold inhibitor. It does not prove how long that kibble stays fresh. Judge the recipe by the ingredients above it and store the bag properly. If your dog needs sodium restriction, request the finished food's total sodium figure.

What it is
How it is made
Chemical producers make sodium propionate as a preservative. They react propionic acid with sodium hydroxide, then dry and screen the resulting salt so food manufacturers can measure it into recipes.6,8
- 01 // Source Acid and alkali Propionic acid, sodium hydroxide and water enter the manufacturer's production line.
- 02 // Process Neutralized The acid and alkali react in water, leaving sodium propionate in solution.
- 03 // Process Dried and screened A dryer removes water, and a screener prepares the solid material for packaging.
- 04 // Output Dry additive The finished sodium propionate ships as crystals or powder for measured addition to food and feed.
What is in it
Composition, dry matter
98.5
% minimum
This is the feed additive's required sodium propionate purity on a dry basis. It describes the additive before mixing, not the amount in dog food.
Why it is in the bag
There to slow mold, not to feed
- Main nutrition
- Supporting nutrient
- Does a job
- Mostly filler
Makers add sodium propionate to slow mold growth, not to feed the dog. In a feed ingredient trial, treated grains and meals had lower yeast and mold counts during storage. Labels list ingredients by weight, but its place on the list does not reveal the dose, and no source we opened gives a typical amount in dog food. EFSA judged it safe for animals under its authorized conditions.2,4,9

01
Controls mold in inputs
A feed ingredient trial found lower yeast and mold counts in treated grains, meals and poultry byproducts during storage. That supports using it before ingredients reach the mixer.2
-
02
Protects purchased stock
Lower mold counts are a practical reason to treat stored ingredients. The feed study measured microbes, not discarded stock or money saved, so a manufacturer's savings cannot be calculated from it.2
How much A feed ingredient study tested 0.30% sodium propionate; no opened source gives a typical amount in finished dog food.2

What the evidence supports
Strong: controlled studies in dogs agree. Some: small or mixed dog data. Thin: mechanism or lab work only. None: nothing, or the evidence points the other way.

Slows mold in stored feed ingredients
Evidence

- Thin
- None
A controlled trial treated 6 feed ingredients with 0.30% sodium propionate and followed them for 8 weeks. Yeast and mold counts fell, supporting ingredient storage use. It did not test finished kibble.2

Brands say
Keeps an opened bag fresh for months
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
At 0.10%, sodium propionate prevented measured mold growth in laboratory biscuits for 3 months. Biscuits are not dog food, and that result cannot tell an owner how long an opened kibble bag will stay fresh.3
-
Brands say
Improves your dog's digestion
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
A dog trial found no change in digestibility or stool consistency with 1.3 g/kg propionic acid. It tested the acid rather than sodium propionate, and provides no evidence that this preservative improves digestion.1
-
Owners say
Sodium propionate is toxic to dogs
Outruns the evidence
Evidence
- Strong
- Some
- Thin
- None
In a 90-day dog study, 1% propionic acid caused esophageal changes; 0.3% did not. The acid is a different ingredient. EFSA judged sodium propionate safe under its authorized feed conditions, so toxicity cannot be inferred from the label name.4,5

What owners ask
-
Q01
Is it just filler?
NoIt has a defined preservative job. Studies measured lower mold counts in treated feed ingredients, though they did not measure a nutritional benefit or prove a shelf life for finished kibble.2
-
Q02
Is it table salt?
NoTable salt pairs sodium with chloride; this ingredient pairs sodium with propionate. Sodium makes up 23.93% of the dry compound, but the label does not disclose how much compound the food contains.6
-
Q03
Does it replace careful storage?
NoMold inhibition has limits, and the available trials do not cover an opened bag of kibble. Keep dry food cool and dry, preferably in its original bag so the lot information remains available.2,3,10
-
Q04
Does its position reveal the dose?
NoIngredients are listed from most to least by weight. A late listing signals less weight than the ingredients above it, but does not disclose the sodium propionate concentration or the food's total sodium.9
